Sakalava funerary post – Madagascar – end 19th – early 20th

DESCRIPTION/EXPERTISE
The Sakalava kingdom appeared on the west coast of Madagascar around 1500. They burry their dead in cemeteries outside of the villages, where the graves are adorned with figures ( male, female, copulating couples or birds). The figures are placed on each corner and in the middle of the longest side. The north -east corner of the tomb has a figure representing the deceased.
